20141213 Crane. Grey Seals at Horsey Gap.


Crane NE of Martham Braod from road. 2800mm as distant.
2 birds calling and flew off South at dusk at Stubbs Mill.


Crane. 1400mm.

Grey Seal pup. Horsey Gap colony doing very well.
Viewing excellent here.

Childhood obesity also a problem in this species.
Excellent views of colony.

20141128 Snow Bunting. Water Shrew. NWT Cley.

Water Shrew. On board walk to centre hides.Return of mammal evidence following the Surge.
Note long hairs on underside of tail to act as keel.
Farmyard Goose with 205 Greylag on Simmonds Scape.
Single White-front with this group also but stayed out on Cricket Marsh.
Snow Bunting. Lone 1st winter male feeding around YH Poppy on shingle ridge.

20141121 Woodcock fence incident. Little Grebe. NWT Cley.

Little Grebe. Up to 10 birds wintering on the Main Drain.

Woodcock.
Had flown into fence on beach side of the Eye Field with revolutionary outcome.
Adult bird, as thin terminal bar on primary coverts and tail feather tipped silvery
white on underside.


Woodcock feathers. Lt to Rt.
 2 primary, upper and underside with hard and narrow outer web.
 Secondary, almost equal webs. 2 small Alula feathers.
3 tail feathers with almost all black inner webs, upper and 2 undersides with silvery white tips.
1st Woodcock painting.
For a camouflage project at school in Norwich.

20141111 Black Brant

Black Brant. Bird first showed over ridge.
Striking white flank patch against near black belly and wing coverts.

Dark-bellied Brent Geese. Flock walked down dip in field towards me.

Black Brant. Note white flecks at rear of neck.

Black Brant. Shots shows darker belly tone and little contrast between breast and belly.
Also large necklace which joins at front of neck.

20141106 Rough-legged Buzzard. Great White Egret.

Rough-legged Buzzard. Juv bird hunting over the dunes.
Buff under-wing coverts and large brown belly patch.
2 birds over dunes, this one in tail moult more active.

Bird caught in direct sunlight.

Arrived at the crack of dawn to avoid the crowed.
Shrike showed as the sun came up but by 0900 a twitch had developed to about 30.....

20141011NWT Holme Dunes Res Guide. Yellow-browed Warbler. Siberian Chiffchaff.

Yellow-browed Warbler. Found and ID by Fiona after advice from Kelvin to check the sycamores by car park.

Yellow-browed Warbler. We then found a very pale Chiffchaff with this bird in the same clump.

20141006 Steppe Grey Shrike

20140921 Masked Shrike. Red-breasted Flycatcher. Jack Snipe. Spurn

Masked Shrike. Juvenile plumage, overal very white bird with gery and black markings.
Showed up well against hedge and at distance.

Size comparison with Great Tit. Without tail length body of bird is about the size of a Great Tit.


Clean white breast as 1st winter but retaining much barring on flanks.
Pale orange wash to right flank only.

Cracking little bird. Performed well but would not move along hedgerow towards the twitch...
Red-breasetd Flycatcher. 1st autumn bird as pale tipped greater coverts and tertials well edged.
